It has been shown by Freudenburg and Gyorgy that dried preparations of cartilage can take up certain cations from solution (l), and that in the case of calcium and magnesium this reaction can be followed by a similar reaction involving phosphate (2). On the other hand, it has been claimed by Roche and Deltour (3) that cartilage first binds phosphate and that this may be followed by a binding of calcium. The present investigation was undertaken to clarify this situation and to establish the type of reaction involved.
